Were you there? WH&T OR KNOT TO RECYCLE – March 30th

We held a really informative evening session to help unravel the mysteries of recycling & in particular what you can & can’t put in your Silver Waste Bin. We were joined by guest speaker Lesley Taylor from Veolia, who gave us a concise talk on what happens to the contents of our silver bin once it gets to Veolia’s Recycling Plant near Mansfield.

As part of her session, Lesley asked us to complete a short quiz to identify items for our silver bin (recycling) or our green bin (general waste). There were some surprises for us all but the main message was, if you are unsure whether an item can be recycled for N&SDC it’s best to put it in your general waste bin rather than risk contaminating your recycling bin. Lesley gave us hope for the future & said the Government is working on plans for consistent recycling across the country in the next 5 years. This will be a big help as living on the border of Lincs & Notts where recycling options vary considerably is confusing to say the least!

Lesley offered us the chance for a group visit to Veolia to see for ourselves how our waste is processed. Watch out for more information about the date of the visit, possibly in August or September, either on your village noticeboard, a flyer through your letterbox or checkout your village FB group.

It was another great event …. BIG GREEN SATURDAY- April 22nd

A big thank you to those of you who attended this recent event in Harby Village Hall. It was a chance to explore ideas & get inspiration on eco-friendly living & it was great to see our three villages coming together for a common purpose. The South Clifton Refill Station had a stall with lots for sale, but you need to visit the Sports Pavilion on Coalyard Lane in South Clifton on Saturday from 10am to 12noon, to see their full range of items including refillable products – well worth a visit. Demonstrations of small changes you can make around your house to be more eco-friendly were explained by Dawn, who sent lots of us home with ideas to try out. The Smoothie Bike was fantastic fun with adults & children alike pedalling furiously to see who could make the fastest smoothie…. & they did taste good too! Thank you to Sarah Turner from Eco Art Design (info@sarahturner.co.uk) for her amazing workshop session on creating floral table decorations out of old plastic bottles. It was great fun & so creative to make something useful out of “rubbish”. There were thought provoking displays about what you could do to work towards a greener lifestyle & it was great to meet other like-minded people who enjoyed sharing their thoughts on our “Pledge Hand prints”. This was washed down with a hot cuppa & some delicious cakes! A big thank you to Lincolnshire Co-op for providing all of our refreshments free of charge – much appreciated.   Thanks also to District Cllr Linda Dales & N&SDC for their support for this event.

THE BIG COMMUNITY SPRING CLEAN UP – May 14th

A very big thank you to everyone who took part in the recent big clean up in our three villages. Over 60 adults & children from Thorney, Harby & Wigsley worked on a Sunday morning to collect litter & wash down street signs to leave our villages sparkly clean once more! This is the third year we have come together to take part in biannual “clean ups”. Whilst we shouldn’t need to do this, if everyone just took their litter home in the first place or more likely, if passing motorists would stop throwing litter especially empty cans, plastic bottles & fast food wrappers out of their car window as they drive through our villages it would be good. Rather than complaining about it, it’s a big well done to everyone who helped out this time – WE MADE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE so thank you! Thanks also to District Cllr Linda Dales for her help in arranging the loan of the litter picking kit from N&SDC & organising the collection of all the rubbish we found – much appreciated. Watch out for the date of the next “Clean Up” which will be in the Autumn & get involved!

A BIT MORE ABOUT THE WH&T GOING GREEN GROUP……                                                      We are collaboration between residents of Wigsley, Harby & Thorney. The group formed to increase awareness of & promote green issues & encourage our joint community to engage in green projects & discussion leading to a greener lifestyle. We are an inclusive group who would welcome your participation at future events & informal meet ups when we will be discussing a range of issues that may be of interest to you.
